A Public Whipping - Part 1
The Masters two assistants stood in the doorway of Titiana's cell. Strapping lads, over six feet. Twin brothers, blonde, handsome and bare chested. Both were wearing leather trousers.
They came into the cell and gently held Titiana's arms, leading her from the cell to the town square.
Titiana was a mature woman, who lived in a small, clean house at the edge of town. She had never married. She was rather tall also, 5 feet 10 , with flowing auburn hair which now had a shock of grey in it. She was no beanpole and was rather well padded, but carried her weight well. Today she was dressed in a long flowing shirt, white cotton loose blouse and a bodice underneath. Bare feet.
Titiana was known as a wise woman and a doula. When the townspeople had health problems they came to her for advice and remedies. In return they gave her food and small sums of money to keep her in the simple things she needed to live. Titiana ranged far and wide collecting plants, often going to the big city miles away.
When women were in childbirth, Titiana would hurry round to their houses. She knew what to do to ease their pain and what procedures to carry out if there were problems.
The Judge at on his raised dais to one side of the stage. "Bring the Witch before me".
The lads dragged Titian before the Judge. She looked up at him defiantly.
"Titiana - you are accused of being a witch.
The milk has been going off in the town.
Cockerels are crowing in the night.
You have been seen by a witness - cavorting with the Devil himself in the church courtyard.
How do you plead ?"
Titiana straightened up "Never - I m not a witch"
"Very well then" said the judge "You will be given Trial by Peine Forte et Dure till you confess to Witchcraft"
At the bottom of the dais sat the Judge's wife, a nasty smile playing on her lips.
She and Titiana had a screaming match in the market only last week when the Judge's wife wanted a bunch of flowers which Titiana had just bought. Titiana refused to hand them over.
